Oak Ridge

Tree work in Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge was built by the U.S. government during World War II as a major site of the Manhattan Project (City of Oak Ridge). Today the city has 48 city-owned greenbelt districts, about 1,566 acres, that serve as buffers between neighborhoods and are protected by Title 13 (Greenways & Greenbelts). If your lot borders one, know your property line before anyone cuts.

  • Greenbelt trees aren't yours to cut. Cutting, topping, pruning, trimming or removing trees on greenbelts, parks, rights-of-way and other city property needs the City Manager's written permission.
  • Dead or diseased private trees. The city can require owners to remove dead or diseased trees that harbor insects or disease threatening other trees, after written notice.
  • Power lines: Oak Ridge Electric trims trees to at least nine feet from primary conductors. It doesn't maintain limbs on the service drop to your house (that's the owner's job), but on request it will remove the service drop so you can trim or remove a tree next to it, at no charge during business hours (Oak Ridge Electric).

Local rules

Oak Ridge rules at a glance

  • Title 13, Chapter 4 (§13-401): no one may cut, top, prune, trim or remove any tree on any greenbelt, right-of-way, park or other city property without written permission from the City Manager.
  • §13-405: the City can require owners to remove, at their own expense, dead or diseased private trees that harbor insects or disease threatening other trees, within 60 days of written notice.
  • For a tree on your own lot, check with Oak Ridge Planning & Development before removing it.

Check with your city; rules change. This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Confirm with the official office before work starts. Full details in the permit guide.
