Before work starts

What to ask about a trimming job

  • Which limbs will come off, and roughly how much of the canopy?
  • Will you avoid topping and make proper pruning cuts?
  • Is cleanup, chipping and hauling included?
  • Can I see proof of liability insurance?

Trimming a tree on city property or in the right-of-way (for example the strip between the sidewalk and the street) can need city approval. See the permit guide.

FAQ

Common questions

When is the best time to trim trees?

Many trees are commonly pruned in late winter while dormant, but dead or hazardous limbs can come off any time. Ask the provider what's best for your species.

Who trims trees near power lines?

In KUB's service area (Knox County and parts of seven surrounding counties), KUB prunes around its lines, normally every three to four years. Trees threatening the service line to an individual home are the homeowner's responsibility, and if you plan to hire a tree service to prune near KUB lines, KUB asks you to contact its Vegetation Management team first. Outside KUB's area, contact your own electric utility. See KUB's tree pruning FAQ.

Is topping a tree a good idea?

Topping (cutting the main limbs back to stubs) is widely discouraged, and the City of Knoxville prohibits topping trees on city property or in the right-of-way. Ask for proper pruning cuts instead.
